Last year, Hope for Miami was invited to partner with FIU Center for Children & Families and The Lucy Project to provide intensive reading services to children with dyslexia challenges.
What is dyslexia? It’s a neurological and biological disorder that makes learning to read and write challenging. Typical teaching methods for children with dyslexia often don’t work because these children need extra help to have their brains figure out letters, letter sounds, and how to differentiate upper and lower case letters to understand the printed page.
Why The Lucy Project? The founder, Sandra Bermudez, has an adopted daughter with dyslexia, so she studied how to help her learn to read. Along the way, Sandra was determined to help other parents in similar situations. Her daughter Lucy is now in 11th grade and thriving with her reading skills, proving that these methods work. As the Miami organization with expertise in dyslexia, FIU selected The Lucy Project as an implementation partner for selected sites.
Our participant children at our West Flagler Park location have made remarkable progress in the initial year of providing these evidence-based and intensive reading services. Here’s what one parent had to say:

What’s next: Hopefully, this project can expand to other partners and site locations, helping even more children experience the joy of reading and the academic success that comes with it.
