OUR IDENTITY
Project U-Turn (PUT) is a Sexual Risk Prevention program under the prevention services division of Hope for Miami. Although our program provides sexual risk avoidance education, we also focus on healthy relationships education/social skills and
character development.
OUR MISSION
The program seeks to reduce high-risk behaviors among Miami-Dade youth by inspiring them to envision and value positive futures for themselves.
WHO WE SERVE
PUT partners with any school or youth-serving organization with students in grades
6th - 12th.
OUR STRATEGY
Our approach to preventing high-risk behavior utilizes "Real Essentials” (evidence-based Abstinence Education curricula).
OUR ACTIVITIES
PUT health educators engage youth in eight weekly sessions on the consequences of high-risk behaviors such as: how “having sex” can potentially affect the teens physically (with STDs and pregnancy), emotionally, psychologically, socially, economically,
and educationally.
Discussion topics include:
• Learning about themselves and others.
• Success sequencing.
• Developing the necessary skills to encourage healthy decision-making.
• The importance of communicating effectively.
• Puberty science.
• Recognizing and avoiding STDs.
• How to process and apply information about contraceptives and their effectiveness against pregnancy and STDs.
• Discovering and adopting practical ways to avoid inappropriate sexual advances.
• Understanding why abstinence until marriage.
